Joseph H. Pilates (pil-lah-teez) invented this sytstem of body conditioning and called it “Contrology.”
Today his method of building core strength is better known as Pilates.
What makes the Pilates Method unique is that all exercises initiate from the muscles of the abdominals, hips, lower back, and buttocks, better known in the pilates world as the “powerhouse.”
Joe said it best: “Contrology (Pilates) develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit”.
People of all ages and levels of physical fitness can participate in this effective form of exercise, since it can start out gently and build up your strength. When you work one-on-one, the teacher can see what your ability is, and work from there.
A main benefit of Pilates’ exercises is that they strengthen the muscles around the joints without putting any stress on the joints themselves. The Pilates Method of movement uses spring-driven resistance machines (The Reformer, Cadillac, Wunder Chair, High Chair, Ped-A-Pole) as well as a series of floor exercises to increase strength, flexibility, stamina , and concentration.
Linda Yasek’s capability as a Pilates instructor has made a major difference in my increased flexibility. This has provided a fuller, more congruent body movement in my swing and is progressively relieving stress created by the demands of the golf swing. I look forward to a long, healthy continuation of my career as a golf pro because of her help.
Linda’s gentle caring nature coupled with her expertise and attention to detail makes her a pleasure to work with.
Through Pilates I have learned how to use muscles I didn’t even know I had and I no longer have lower back pain. My new body awareness has helped me immensely in my everyday life. I’m stronger, more balanced, move more efficiently and bend and lift things with ease. No matter what is going on in my life, I always feel rejuvenated and pain free when I leave Linda’s studio.
I have been working with Linda for 3 years.
I originally began Pilates in order to strengthen my back and abdominal muscles in hopes that it would alleviate back pain. It not only relieved my back pain but helped me remain comfortable and strong during my pregnancy (I had been working with Linda for a year and a half before becoming pregnant with my daughter).
I was able to continue my Pilates routine through my seventh month of pregnancy. My Pilates practice during pregnancy benefited me greatly as I was able to give birth within 20 minutes and regained my pre-pregnancy shape within months.
I would highly recommend Linda as she is knowledgeable, has an extremely astute eye and keeps Pilates creative and fun.
My daughter convinced me to take Pilates with her as her partner a few years ago. I am not a fan of gym or exercise, but since starting, I rarely miss my session. Each session is a great workout for muscle tone, and under Linda’s encouragement, my strength and flexibility continue to develop. Since my daughter moved out of the area, Linda has worked with my schedule and keeps me “partnered” – exercise is actually fun!
For years I have worked out with weights, stairmaster, treadmill you name it and I did it. I kept trying to get the physique I wanted. But not until I started practicing Pilates did I finally get the body I wanted, muscular and strong, but also long and lean. In addition, my chronic back and shoulder problem is no longer in existence.
It’s amazing how wonderful my back feels after doing Pilates. In addition, my job as a dietitian demands that I maintain a healthy weight and Pilates is the ideal exercise to help me achieve that goal.
I give a lot of credit for my continued active lifestyle to Linda. Through private and semi-private lessons, she has contributed to my well-being. It is always exciting to come to class and see what new refinements Linda has in store. I have been with Linda for four years and each week there is always a challenge, and the reward of feeling great.
